Your Weed Management Program
Peanuts are most effected by direct competition from weeds in
the early season. The first 40 days is when the weed control battle
is won or lost. In the late-season, weeds can cause problems with
digging, and the result is harvest losses.
To improve your weed management program:
work to obtain a quick emerging, uniform crop
select herbicides based on weeds present
control weeds when they are small, preferably when they
are less than 2 inches tall
conduct maintenance check and calibrate sprayer
make application under good conditions
rotate crops to change weed control ability
limit early-season cultivation, which leads to another
flush of weeds
Using Herbicides
The most critical time for herbicide applications is at-cracking
and very early post-emergence. Controlling that first flush of
weeds is most important and will reduce the amount of reemerging
weeds the rest of the season. Being timely with herbicide applications
is the key to successful control of weeds.
Timeliness, attention to various cultural practices and the proper
use of herbicides is critical for an effective weed management
program.
